The last person to win back-to-back races at Sonoma was Jeff Gordon … 14 years ago. Gordon won the annual June race there in 1998, 1999 and 2000. Since then, there's been 11 different winners with only Gordon (2004 and 2006) and Tony Stewart (2001 and 2005) repeating. In fact, three of those drivers who won (Robby Gordon, Juan Pablo Montoya and Ricky Rudd) don't even participate in Sprint Cup racing anymore. That just goes to show you how diverse the group of previous winners is. Every year it seems somebody new takes their turn in victory lane. And most of the time, they aren't even the pole sitter, a position that seems pretty comfy if you can get it due to the strategy that gives the cars up front an advantage in road-course racing. In fact, the last time the pole-sitter won at Sonoma was 2004 … when Jeff Gordon did it. Five times, the winner started 10th or worse. Juan Pablo Montoya won from a 32nd-place start. Kasey Kahne did it from 30th place.
